Girls on the Run – The Slide Show!

It has been a whirlwind of editing at my house. After photographing this incredible event at Hains Point in Washington, DC I had this vision of the slide show running in my head which I had to make come to life.

Girls On The Run – Race Day!

Wow wow WOW!!!! The Girls On The Run WonderGirl 5K at Hains Point in Washington, DC yesterday was AWESOME! Incredible to watch. Incredible to be a part of. Just seeing the faces of the girls as they came across the finish line was inspiring. Some of the girls finished the race in under 40 minutes…I am lucky if I can run a mile in that time. This has to be one of the coolest things I have ever been a part of.

It was a blast to photograph. I really felt like a photographer with my two cameras dangling off my neck. The highlight for me was hanging out of a car window with approximately $10k worth of camera equipment, while a volunteer drove me so I could capture images on the race route. Crazy! What were we thinking? Maybe not one of my brighter moves…but sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get the shot.

Here are a few highlights.

Edited 12/2/08: I was asked back to photograph the GOTR Race on December 7, 2008.  Subscribe or bookmark my blog to be notifed for the hights of the December 7th race!

Brandi Yee - Emily – Fantastic pictures! Thanks so much for sharing them. I’m so glad I got to be the official race photographer driver! You definitely captured the fun spirit of the race.
Brandi

Sarah Boone - UNBELIEVABLE…I knew you were the perfect person to capture the SOUL of Girls on the Run. I cried as soon as I saw the pictures and I cannot wait to see the rest. They are deeply personal and passoniate photos. CONGRATULATIONS. You ROCK! Thank you for being with us yesterday!

Best, Sarah

Girls on the Run

I have the best clients. Honestly I do. I meet all sorts of really interesting parents, mostly moms…and some cool dads too.

Two former clients of mine asked me to help out with a fantastic group they are involved with called Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run is a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. The programs combine training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals of the programs are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development for girls in grades 3-8.

I have been asked to photograph the 5K WonderGirl event race this Saturday May 17th at Hains Point. I am really excited. Earlier this week many of the volunteers met up to put together the race bags. it was a wild mess, with lots of little kids “helping” us. But int he end, all the bags were stuffed with tee shirts, wrist bands and other goodies.

This was the perfect excuse to rent myself a SWEEEET camera body so I can have two bodies at the race. If you want to rent camera equipment check out these guys at LensRental.com. They are awesome to work with. I rented a Canon 1D Mark 111, the premier sports shooting camera. This thing can fire off 11 frames per second…sounds like a gun going off.

I will be blogging about the race after it is over. So check back in a week to see what it was all about!

Mr. D

Meet Mr. “D”. I met up with D at the Park today. He has been battling leukemia in recent months. But he is on the mend. And it was marvelous to watch him run, swing and play. One minute he looks like an old soul, and the next like a typical three year old running and playing without a care in the world. Then again most kids are like that.

He is sweet Mr “D”

Nancy - Wow wow WOW!!

You DID it!!

I can hardly wait for more!!

Inspiration from a sleep over

My kids are into sleep over these days. Something magical about having a friend come and spend the night, stay up late giggling and playing. It is quite wonderful to watch. As a child I do not remember having sleep overs with my friends that often, so it it fascinating to watch it through adult eyes. Recently my son had a friend come for a sleep over, and with him came another special friend; a 90lb golden-doodle the size of a small pony otherwise known as Milo.

I have mentioned before that I stalk a bunch of other photographer’s blogs for inspiration. One of my new favorites is Anna Kuperberg out of San Francisco. She has this great site called Slobberspace, where she posts about her dog portraits. If you are into dogs you have to check this site out, it is fantastic. She captures the essence and spirit of dogs in her images like I have never seen. She also is a kick ass wedding and lifestyle photographer too, and she would be on my top 5 list of who I would call to shoot my family.

So when Milo came for a sleep over, all I could think about is how I could capture Milo, ala Anna Kuperberg. Not that I could ever compare to her, but after poring over her work I really got inspired to try something new and shoot something different, and just shake it up. She does some amazing stuff with a 24 mm lens. I shot almost all of these with my 24-70 and tried to stay at 24mm. Really made me look at stuff in a whole new way.

Janine - That is the cutest dog I’ve ever seen! Do you think the owners would sell? Awesome pics. Too cool.

My Birthday Buddy

This handsome fellow is my birthday buddy. He was born on my birthday two years ago. He also happens to be son of good friends. He is the perfect meld of his parents; has his mothers beautiful eyes, and in the next glance all I can see is his father’s impish grin. We had lots of fun earlier this week with the sprinkler and picking buttercups in the backyard.

Superheros

My little Eli has the most amazing imagination. He will spend hours playing what he has dubbed “Characters”. Essentially it is taking our assortment of Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, Superheros and sometimes he will throw in a stuffed animal or two, and they have a battle. If I am standing nearby and ask him what he is doing, he will often tell me to stop listening and drop his voice just low enough so that it is really hard to hear. He can entertain himself like this for hours. I love capturing scenes like this, this is exactly who he is right now. This is the kind of photography that I love.
