Girls on the Run – Rainy Day Fun

It was a wet, cold and rainy Sunday morning but it did not dampen the spirits of the girls who came out to run off their excess candy consumption for the Girls on the Run-DC 5K!  This was a first for me shooting in the pouring rain.  Thank goodness the great folks at Canon make a camera that can withstand the elements.

As always this is such a great event and the enthusiasm and supports is what helps propel the girls to the finish line.   Here a a few of my favorites

Holloween

I know there are moms and dads out there that believe in kids making their own costumes for Halloween.  And I must admit there is something great in seeing a thoughtful homemade costume.  But if you were like me growing up, thinking up something clever AND having the talent to execute it was beyond my reach.  My homemade costumes never lived up to my perfectionist expectations.

Like many of my parenting choices, I choose to exercise the exact opposite of what I was raised with in hopes that my own kids will not suffer from “not crafty enough” syndrome.    I have found other ways to be “crafty” and to release my inner Martha Stewart.

We began our Halloween celebration with a 1/2 of school which was eaten by the parade of costumes

Eli as a ninja minus the swords accessorizes (no weapons), which was the reason he chose this costume to begin with

Cal chose to be  Redskin foot ball player, before they started to suck, and now wishes he made another choice.

We then spent the afternoon carving pumpkins

Boys

I love little boys.  I love all my girl clients too, casue it is such a great change of pace, but the boys always melt my heart.  They are full of energy and typically up for anything.  I love how raw and honest they are.   And their faces always tell you exaclty what you need to know.

baby fix

I am not ashamed to admit that every now and then I need a baby “fix”.   I am lucky that my job allows me to satisfy that urge to hold, cuddle, and play with babies.  And it is almost better when they are not your own, cause when they fuss and cry you get to hand them back over.

Last year I was called to photograph triplets.   It was a long shoot.  In part because I spent a lot of time holding and cuddling them.  But also because it is not easy to get 3 babies all on the same page all at the same time.  Here is what they looked like last year…and this pretty much summed up our  shoot.

big girl

I met up with the M family this time last year.  They are a sweet young family with one big girl and one on the way.  Miss M is the most delightful 20 month old and is so excited for her baby sister due to arrive in January.  It such an honor when a family allows me the privilege to document how they grow.  It always touches my heart.

We had a wonderful adventure at Roosevelt Island…a little hidden gem in the middle of the Potomac.

Magic happens twice

I met this family back in 2007 when I was just starting out.  I went to their fab apartment in Adams Morgan on a cold and dreary March day.   It was one of those session where I was not sure with the dreary light what I was going to get.  But as we got going I could see there was magic.  The moment I looked through the viewfinder and pressed the button I knew I had something special.

When they called me to come shoot their now 2 boys , I was excited but also nervous…could I possibly recreate the same magic?

Thankfully, beautiful children with lots of personality and charisma photograph well.

The Family I Choose

They say you have two families.  The family you come from and the family you choose.  I have a beautiful family with my husband and kids.  And I also have this amazing family that I choose with my friends.  I  am so fortunate to have them in my life.  My girlfriends are all extraordinary, smart, talented, inspiring and beautiful women.   And with them come their extraordinary, smart, talented, inspiring, beautiful children and spouses.    They are an integral part of my life, and I don’t know what I would do without them.   Here are some of my incredible friends.  They are a part of the family I have chosen.   I am a lucky gal.
